The leaders of the rival armies were King Henry IV and Henry \u2018Hotspur\u2019 Percy, the son of the Earl of Northumberland.<\/p>\n<p>The Percys were an influential family of Northumberland nobles, who had supported Henry Bolingbroke, as he was known before he became king, in him deposing King Richard II and taking over the crown, and later in Henry\u2019s conflicts with the Welsh and the Scots. Henry IV\u2019s promise of land and favours for the Percys did not materialise, and the disgruntled nobles raised an army in revolt, headed by Henry &#8216;Hotspur&#8217; Percy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1246\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1246\" style=\"width: 203px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1246\" src=\"http:\/\/www.guide-for-london.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Hotspur-1-203x300.jpg\" alt=\"Henry Hotspur\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.guide-for-london.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Hotspur-1-203x300.jpg 203w, https:\/\/www.guide-for-london.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Hotspur-1.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1246\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The statue of Hotspur at Alnwick (where he was born) &#8212; from English Monarchs website<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Henry Percy was the eldest son of the Earl of Northumberland. By 1403 he was already a distinguished military commander, with experience of leading troops in England and abroad. He&nbsp;enrolled some Cheshire arches, who were knows as longbow specialists and an expert fighting force, and headed towards the Welsh borders, to meet his uncle, Thomas Percy, Earl of Westmorland, an expert military commander.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1247\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1247\" style=\"width: 230px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1247\" src=\"http:\/\/www.guide-for-london.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/512px-King_Henry_IV_from_NPG_2-230x300.jpg\" alt=\"Henry IV\" width=\"230\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.guide-for-london.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/512px-King_Henry_IV_from_NPG_2-230x300.jpg 230w, https:\/\/www.guide-for-london.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/512px-King_Henry_IV_from_NPG_2.jpg 459w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1247\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">King Henry IV (from the National Portrait Gallery)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meanwhile Henry IV, unaware of the Percy\u2019s revolt, was marching his army towards Scotland, hoping for the support of this powerful family in the north of England. On 12 of July he found out about the real state of affairs and turned to meet the rebel army. By 20<sup>th<\/sup> July both parties reached Shrewsbury and camped on the opposite sides of the River Severn a short distance from the town.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1241\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1241\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1241\" src=\"http:\/\/www.guide-for-london.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_6777-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"The Severn at Shrewsbury\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.guide-for-london.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_6777-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.guide-for-london.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_6777.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1241\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Severn at Shrewsbury<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>King Henry\u2019s army of around 14,000 was bigger than the Percys\u2019, but he was prepared to negotiate the terms. He was hit by an arrow, which pierced his face. John Bradmore, the doctor who treated him left a detailed account of how he used specially made instruments sanitised with rose honey to remove the arrowhead stuck in Prince Henry\u2019s facial bones. He survived and had a big scar on his face for the rest of his life.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1249\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1249\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1249\" src=\"http:\/\/www.guide-for-london.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_6726-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Recreation at the Battlefield 1403 museum\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.guide-for-london.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_6726-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.guide-for-london.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_6726.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1249\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Recreation at the Battlefield 1403 museum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Shakespeare put the Battle of Shrewsbury as the culmination of the play Henry IV Part 1,&nbsp; the conflict of Prince Henry (Shakespeare called him Prince Hal) and Hotspur taking centre stage. Shakespeare made them the same age (in reality Hotspur was about 20 years older), and in the play it is Prince Hal who kills Hotspur. In reality, it is not known who shot the arrow which finished Hotspur off, when he lifted the visor of his helmet to get a better view of the battle. The hammerbeam roof dates from the Victorian period too.
